THE INNER SPHERE IN FLAMES... For over 200 years, the five Successor States of the near-legendary Star League have warred among themselves for dominion over the whole Inner Sphere. There have been three Succession Wars to date, but no victor. The cost of war is high. The leaders of the Successor States must weigh each maneuver to see whether the gain in territory is worth the loss of Mechs. Only the most ruthless and brilliant leader will emerge as the next Star Lord. The Succession Wars is a 2- to 5-player game, where each player assumes the role of a House leader. All the most famous and infamous regiments of the BattleTech universe are at your command - the elite Kurita Sword of Light, the Davion Guards, and the mercenary unit Wolfs Dragoons. The game allows players to fight any Succession War, including the fourth, toward which the Inner Sphere is now building. The game system is simple and fast, allowing strategy - not the rules - to be the deciding factor.

So, yeah, the First Succession War: while it isn't exactly the orgy of destruction that previous products suggested the 1SW was, it now makes quite a bit more sense when the weapons of mass destruction get broken out and keep getting broken out. Rather than a mutually assured destruction of throwing around nukes willy-nilly once one goes off, most every individual decision to glass a planet makes sense (or at least can be understood) in its own context. Glass enough planets, though, and everything falls apart. Of particular note is how the WarShip navies of the Great Houses all suffer on the order of 90% losses, mostly because WarShips do not react well to nuclear warheads.

Plus, the new Classics in the back. The art for the Wasp is a personal favorite.

BattleTech Historical 1st Succession *OP 9781941582039 Books Reviews

I was not too disappointed with this new book. After all it covers one of the vital areas of Battletech history the first of the Succession Wars. The book does a decent job of giving the reader an overview of the war and does so with good maps which show the gradual borders shifts caused by the war. Better still the book gives you all the tools that you need to create Battletech units from the time period and it gives you insights into how the different factions organized their forces during this period.

Its biggest problem, for me as a gamer, is that it is too general. Other Battletech historical offerings give you rich details on the campaigns and battles of the war being covered with some books going into great detail with battle maps, orders of battle, and so on. I guess a war which spanned over 30 years of conflict on dozens, if not hundreds, of worlds is too big to cover in a 200+ volume. But it would have been nice to get detailed coverage on at least the keystone campaigns/battles. Instead what you get is a general overview of the war with a few narrow looks at a few battles, but no maps and very few useable details for gamers. In fact, much of what is written is decades old stuff imported from the various "house" books that were written in the '80's. It is nice to have all of these accounts in one volume to be sure especially since all of these books are out of publication. But it would have been even better to get new accounts of the war and get more detail for gaming.

Still it is a great book and well worth the purchase if you're a Battletech gamer or "historian". You still get very useful details that allow you to bring the war to life on your table top and that is worth something all by itself. Just be aware that you're getting a lot of rehashed materials and not a lot of gamable details, or at least not as much as you would have gotten in the FedCom Civil War or the 4th Succession War..
Excellent book in this series. Good action, stays close to the story line and makes you wish the author solved the mystery of what happened to the survivors
Very good details about this part of the Battletech timeline. Similar in scope to the "Wars of Reaving".
This book is written as a historical account. It can seem dry, but within the context of the Battletech universe, I found it quite enjoyable (but I like history books). Also plenty of info included for building campaigns during the First Succession War. Glad I picked it up!
The book was fun to read, and had excellent information on the era. I will enjoy setting up scenarios within this era. However, inside the box was only the book. It DOES NOT include many of the items that it lists as part of the product. In particular I was looking forward to the playing map, but it wasn't included.
